Print Editions – What’s the difference?

PRINT DESCRIPTIONS – This is a general guide only as there can sometimes be slight variations from different publishers.

Most publishers – but not all – supply prints with a Certificate of Authenticity (notable exceptions being Alan Fearnley art)

Acid-Free Paper. All paper used in the publication of the above artists prints is specially treated to neutralise its natural acidity. This protects prints from discolouration and deterioration

The Editions

Restricted Editions, although not numbered, are also limited. However, signatories may change before the publication is sold out.

Limited Edition prints are signed and numbered at the time of publication and limited to a set number (normally between 500 and 1500).

Artist’s Proofs are an old tradition of reserving a quantity of prints for the artist’s use, usually restricted to about 10% of the edition. These are signed by the artist and numbered showing the quantity of Artist’s Proofs available. Publisher’s Proofs etc. are a variant of this

Remarques are where the artist is commissioned to draw a unique pencil drawing normally in the bottom left hand border of the print. In most cases you can specify the subject of the image. A double remarque is larger and with more detail. These are signed by the artist and numbered showing the quantity available

Canvas Proofs are printed on canvas and give a lot of ‘life’ to the image. Some artists will use canvas board. These are generally signed in paint and numbered by the artist
