Sir Douglas Bader
The legendary Wing Leader Douglas Bader High over the south coast of England, flying his beloved Mark V Spitfire.
With the Battle of Britain imminent, Bader (who had lost his legs in a flying accident in 1931) was given command of a depleted squadron of young demoralised Canadian pilots following the fall of France. When assigned a new squadron commander with artificial legs, the pilots of 242 Squadron became even more despondent. Bader quickly dispelled their doubts with a brilliant aerobatic demonstration in his Hurricane, and within a few weeks had transformed the dispirited Canadians into one of the RAF’s elite fighter units.
