Description
30th JULY 1943
“We saw the three U-Boats on the surface manoeuvring in formation and keeping their bows pointed towards the six attacking aircraft. One of which I saw, was a Coastal Command B-24 Liberator (53 Sqn.) and another Sunderland which drew a hell of a lot of cannon and machine gun fire. I focused on the lead U-Boat. It was bigger than the other two and anti aircraft fire poured from its guns. I went in on beam attack, jinking violently at the lowest altitude I could without hitting the water. My Sunderland started to get hit by bullets and shrapnel from the other two subs. My front turret gunner was able to rake the U-Boat’s gun positions as we closed on the target and we saw bodies fly off the decks into the sea. I pulled the Sunderland hard to clear the boat’s tower as we released depth charges. They straddled the sub and exploded right under her aft section and broke her back. I only just cleared the tower. We were amazed to discover that the U-boat we had sunk was U-461, our Sunderland was call-sign U for Uncle 461 Sqn”.
