Description

FRANCE 26TH MARCH 1940
Flying Officer Edgar James ‘Cobber’ Kain was a New Zealander who
joined the Royal Air Force in 1936. A natural fighter pilot he was posted to
73 squadron flying the Hawker Hurricane Mk 1 and in 1939 was in combat
over France with this squadron based at Rouvres. In March 1940 he scored
his 4th and 5th aerial combat victories – 2 Bf109 Es – to become the RAFs’
first fighter ace of the second world war, and the first to win a wartime
DFC. He achieved a score of 17 victories before he was tragically killed in
a flying accident on 7th June 1940.
He was just 21 years old.
This painting depicts a dogfight in which, Edgar James ‘Cobber’ Kain and his section fought
against the Messerschmitt Bf109Es of JG53 led by the Luftwaffe’s most
formidable ace Hauptmann Werner Molders (Black Chevron and Triangle)
with his wingman Feldwebel Weigelt (White 3) in the skies over the
Franco-German border region.
“Cobber Kain was ’73’s most split-arsed pilot. He often led his section 40
miles or more over Germany, even though it was strictly against orders to
cross the frontier.” Steve Richie. Hurricane ace.

All orders are supplied with the back story behind the painting.
